Game Development

Love playing games and wonder how they are made? Got your own game idea but don’t know how to start developing it? In this course you will learn to make games using a variety of tools, but coding is only the beginning.

Game developers need to be creative, solve problems and have a good understanding of what the player is feeling. That’s why the skills learned in game development can be used in many other areas of life too.

Curriculum

Scratch is one of the most widely used programmes to help beginners get into coding. You code by snapping colourful blocks together which, for beginners, is easier and quicker than typing code. At first glance, you might think Scratch is only suitable for children, however, you would be wrong. Scratch teaches many of the fundamental aspects of coding that you will use later on in more traditional programming languages.

Skills Taught

  • Player controls
  • Enemy AI
  • Detecting collisions
  • Using variables and lists
  • Scoring systems
  • Collecting items
  • Sprite animation

Love2D is a game engine which uses the Lua coding language. Lua is a great language for beginners but it is also used by professionals, especially for coding games. Parts of Angry Birds were coded in Lua; Roblox also uses a version of Lua.

Skills Taught

  • All the skills above +
  • Lua scripting language
  • Making maps in ‘Tiled’ software
  • Publishing Desktop games

Godot is great for making more complex games, including 3D games. You can also publish your games for Android, iOS and web. Godot is easier to get started with than some of the big game engines you may have heard of like Unity or Unreal Engine. It also runs more smoothly on less powerful computers. We think it’s a great choice for anyone wanting to get into game development in a more serious way.
